Estancias in El Calafate: Guide to Choosing Your Ranch Day in 2025

El Calafate's three tourist ranches offer very different experiences depending on your priority. Estancia 25 de Mayo is just 3 km from downtown and is ideal for a dinner with a folk show without sacrificing excursion time. Nibepo Aike, the only active cattle ranch within Los Glaciares National Park, offers the best horseback riding in the area and genuine spit-roasted lamb cooked by gauchos. Estancia Cristina requires a full day but combines navigation among icebergs, pioneer history, and the only land viewpoint of the Upsala Glacier.
How to Choose Based on Your Itinerary
If you only have 3 days in El Calafate and have already booked Perito Moreno and a boat trip, 25 de Mayo allows you to make the most of an otherwise free afternoon. If you have 4 or more days and want to experience the deep Patagonia, Nibepo Aike takes you to the heart of the Patagonian countryside. If you're looking for the most complete experience and are willing to invest a full day, Cristina is an expedition that combines everything: boat, history, glaciers, and landscapes you won't see on any other tour.
Estancia 25 de Mayo: The Most Accessible
25 de Mayo is the closest ranch to town, located 3 km from the center of El Calafate on 17,000 hectares at the foot of Cerro Calafate. Its main advantage is that you can complete the entire experience in an afternoon-evening without losing travel time.
What the Experience Includes
The tour begins at 5:30 PM with hotel pickup. Upon arrival, you're welcomed with mate, homemade tortas fritas, and cowboy coffee by the bonfire. Afterwards, you witness a sheep herding demonstration with dogs and traditional shearing with scissors in the old shed. The walk along the Arroyo Calafate trail includes interpretation of native flora and ends at a viewpoint where you taste confit lamb with mountain wine.
Dinner at El Quincho includes criolla empanadas as a starter, spit-roasted lamb with chorizo, morcilla (blood sausage), rustic potatoes, and organic garden salads, plus dessert of your choice. If you're interested in knowing where else to eat Patagonian lamb, check out our guide on where to eat lamb in El Calafate. While you dine, a folk group performs typical Argentine dances: chacarera, zamba, malambo. Return to the hotel is approximately at 10:30 PM.
Who It's Ideal For
25 de Mayo works very well for families with children who can't handle long days, travelers with tight itineraries, or anyone who wants a night of gastronomy and culture without investing a full day. The folk show sets it apart from the other ranches and is particularly valued by international travelers who want to see traditional dances.
Prices and Season 2025
The Ranch Evening with Dinner Show tour costs $110,000 ARS per adult (approximately USD 95 at the current exchange rate). Children aged 3 to 12 pay $77,000 ARS. There is also a Dinner Show only option starting from $65,000 ARS, which begins later and does not include the rural activities.
The ranch operates from September to April. There are no departures during winter (May to August).

Estancia Nibepo Aike: The Most Authentic
Nibepo Aike is the only tourist ranch located within Los Glaciares National Park that maintains active livestock production. It's 56 km from El Calafate via Provincial Route N°15, known as the Estancias Road. The journey itself is part of the experience: it's common to spot condors, red foxes, and guanacos along the way.
The History Behind the Ranch
The name comes from Croatian: "Nibepo" was the nickname of José Panepinto, a pioneer who arrived in this area over a century ago looking for a place to settle. His family continues to manage the ranch three generations later. The historic main house preserves original constructions over 110 years old, including the shearing shed which now functions as a small museum.
What the Ranch Day Includes
Departure from El Calafate is at 8:30 AM (8:00 AM in April and May). Upon arrival, you are welcomed in the quincho with views of the Andes Mountains, where you are served tea, coffee, or mate with homemade tortas fritas or cakes. The guide tells the history of the ranch while the day's activities are prepared.
Afterwards, you walk to the corrals to witness the milking and sheep herding towards the paddocks. The gauchos perform a demonstration of criolla skills and shearing with scissors as it was done before the arrival of machinery. From Cerro Cristal or the shore of Lago Roca, you have panoramic views of the Perito Moreno Glacier in the distance.
Lunch is the classic spit-roasted lamb (cordero a la estaca), slow-cooked for hours. It includes salads, dessert, and a glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage. Return to El Calafate is approximately at 3:30 PM.
Nibepo Aike's Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is Nibepo Aike's highlight. The short 45-minute option ($35,000 ARS additional) rides along the shore of Lago Roca and is suitable for beginners. The horseback ride to Cordón de los Cristales lasts 3 hours, departs after lunch, and requires prior riding experience. The trail borders the South Arm of Lago Argentino with views of the mountain landscape that can only be appreciated on horseback.
For the more adventurous, Nibepo Aike offers multi-day horseback riding programs to the Hidden Glaciers, with overnight stays at remote ranch outposts. These are journeys that combine genuine rural life with landscapes very few tourists get to see.
A Fact Only Locals Know
In spring (October-November), the ruptures of the Perito Moreno Glacier can cause fluctuations in the level of Lago Argentino that directly affect the Nibepo Aike area. The trails show water marks from different eras, and the guide explains how the natural ice dam formed by the glacier has shaped this landscape for decades.
Prices and Season 2025
The Ranch Day costs $125,000 ARS per adult (approximately USD 105). Children aged 4 to 10 pay $74,500 ARS. Transfer is included. The 45-minute horseback ride is optional and paid separately: $35,000 ARS.
The season runs from September 15th to May 15th. There are departures both in the morning and in the afternoon.

Estancia Cristina: The Complete Expedition
Estancia Cristina is not just a visit to a ranch: it's a full-day expedition that combines navigation on Lago Argentino, the history of Patagonian pioneers, and the only land access to the Upsala Glacier viewpoint. It can only be reached by boat from Puerto Punta Bandera, 47 km from El Calafate.
Navigation Among Icebergs
The boat departs at 9:00 AM from Punta Bandera. During the almost 2 hours of navigation, you cross the North Arm of Lago Argentino and enter the Upsala Channel, where you begin to see icebergs detached from the glacier. These blocks can be several meters high, with shades ranging from white to intense blue depending on the density of the ice.
Unlike other navigations where you only see the glacier from the water, Cristina allows you to disembark and spend 6 hours on land exploring the ranch and its surroundings.
The Folk Museum and History
Upon arrival, the first stop is the Folk Museum, housed in the old shearing shed. There you learn about the history of the Masters, the English family who founded the ranch in 1914, and what pioneer life was like in one of Patagonia's most isolated places. The ranch once had more than 15,000 sheep and was completely self-sufficient.
Tour Options
Estancia Cristina offers three distinct modalities:
- The Classic Tour includes the museum, a walk to the Caterina River and the historic chapel, and a low-difficulty trek to Cascada de los Perros. You have free time to have lunch at the ranch's restaurant (lunch is not included but is worthwhile).
- The Discovery Tour adds a 4x4 journey to the Continental Ice Refuge. From there, you walk 15 minutes through glacial erosion terrain to the Upsala Viewpoint, the only land point from which you can see the eastern front of the glacier, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, and the tributary glaciers that feed it. Upsala is the third-largest glacier in South America, and this viewpoint offers a perspective that doesn't exist on any other tour in El Calafate.
- The Trekking Tour replaces the 4x4 with a 4-hour hike through the Fossil Canyon, where you can see marine fossils exposed by glacial action. It's the most physically demanding option but also the most immersive.
Why It's Worth the Price
Cristina is the most expensive excursion in El Calafate, but it's the only one that combines navigation, history, gastronomy, landscape, and exclusive access to Upsala. If you have to choose just one "premium" excursion during your trip, this is the one that leaves the most lasting impression.
Prices and Season 2025
The Discovery Tour has an approximate value of $310,000 ARS (USD 265). The Trekking Tour is around $375,000 ARS (USD 320). Prices do not include the entrance fee to Los Glaciares National Park ($45,000 ARS for foreigners) or lunch at the ranch.
The season runs from October to April. Departures are daily from Punta Bandera at 9:00 AM, with an approximate return at 8:00 PM.

Our Recommendation Based on Your Itinerary
- With 3 days in El Calafate: Check our 3-day itinerary in El Calafate — dedicate one day to Perito Moreno, another to navigation, and the third evening to 25 de Mayo. This way, you make the most of your time without sacrificing any experience.
- With 4-5 days: Add Nibepo Aike if you like horses and want to see the rural side of Patagonia. The combination of horseback riding + spit-roasted lamb is hard to beat.
- With 6+ days or a glacier-focused trip: Estancia Cristina is a must-do. Upsala is as impressive as Perito Moreno but seen by far fewer people. Combine it with Big Ice or Minitrekking for the complete glacier experience.
- If traveling with kids: 25 de Mayo is the most practical due to schedules and duration. Nibepo Aike also works well but the journey is longer. Cristina is demanding for children under 10.
- If you want to avoid crowds: Nibepo Aike receives far fewer visitors than the other two. In low season, you can have the ranch almost to yourself.
